La Lotería: A Bilingual BingoGame for Kids

La Lotería is a popular game in Mexican culture that combines colorful illustrations with fun and socializing. This delightful pastime has been cherished for generations, and now I’m thrilled to share a kid-friendly version with you!

Unveiling the Origins of La Lotería

The origin of the Mexican Lotería can be traced back several centuries to Spain. The game’s roots can be found in asimilar game called “Il Giuoco del Lotto d’Italia” (The Italian Lottery), which was introduced in Italy during the 15thcentury. From Italy, the game spread to other European countries, including Spain.

It was in Spain that the game evolved into what we now know as the “Lotería.” The Spanish colonists brought the game with them to Mexico during the 18th century. Over time, the game became deeply intertwined with Mexican culture and traditions, adopting its unique Mexican charm and style.

The modern version of the Mexican Lotería, with its distinct set of images, is attributed to a man named Don Clemente Jacques. In the late 19th century, Don Clemente Jacques, a French businessman and entrepreneur, established a printing company in Mexico City. This company later became renowned for producing Lotería cards.

In the early 20th century, Don Clemente Jacquescommissioned an artist named Don Antonio Vanegas Arroyo to create the iconic set of images used in the Lotería game. Vanegas Arroyo was an engraver and illustrator known for his work in popular literature and chapbooks (small, inexpensive books). He skillfully designed the charming and culturally rich images that would become the heart and soul of the Mexican Lotería.

The game quickly gained popularity across Mexico because of its engaging and accessible nature. La Lotería was not only an enjoyable pastime, but also a way for people to come together, socialize, and celebrate their shared culture. It became a beloved tradition in towns, villages, and households throughout the country.

Today, the Mexican Lotería remains an integral part of Mexican culture and is cherished by people of all ages. The original set of images by Don Antonio Vanegas Arroyocontinues to be widely used, though variations and adaptations of the game have emerged over time. It has also found a place in pop culture, inspiring artwork, merchandise, and even themed events, further solidifying its status as an enduring symbol of Mexican identity and joy.
